Classroom community is about our students being comfortable and teachers creating a welcoming environment in our classroom. It's about them being able to truly be themselves. It's important that students listen and respect each other. Our students need to feel like they have a voice in their learning. They want to feel important. They want their ideas to matter to their teachers and to their peers. Our students need to feel like they belong and that we are listening and understanding the way they learn the best.
Cooperative learning is an example of an excellent way that classrooms can be student led and monitored by the teachers. Cooperative learning allows students to work with others in small groups using different kinds of tools and reaching all types of learners. These groups can be adjusted as needed while teachers monitor student involvement.
We want students to enjoy learning and want to come to school. We want it to be a place where they feel safe and loved. The students want to know what they are learning is connected to real life! It's our job as educators to be sure all these things happen because it's our attitude that dictates the energy in our classroom.
